As The Weather Gets Colder, Towing Is Heating Up

With the record-low temperatures yesterday and very cold weather today still, cars in the area are having trouble starting.

This is a sound that many of us are used to hearing. It's the sound of your car not starting in these record-breaking lows, and it's mainly because of your battery.

Brian Tiry/Service Writer: well boost their vehicle, mainly because of the cold the battery can freeze it can lose its charge or it doesn't have enough power to turn the vehicle over

Brian Tiry with Cenex in Grand Forks says today they are giving out ETA's of about an hour. Yesterday though they were giving out even longer waiting times.

Brian Tiry/Service Writer: When AAA called we were telling them 5 plus hours, and they were doing it because the entire town was so backed up.

WDAZ road along with Travis Fleck on one of his many calls to boost a car's battery. This type of call usually takes around ten to fifteen minutes. Travis says if you don't need to drive, don't.

Travis Fleck/Tow Truck Driver: If people don't need to drive I just don't recommend driving, because if you need a boost one night, more than likely it's not going to start the next day, so I would just wait till the cold snap is over to get your car started.

The calls that the 32nd Avenue Cenex are getting are mostly battery jumps and people locking keys in cars as they warm their vehicles up. With the flood of calls coming in, they ask you to be patient.

Brian Tiry/Service Writer: We do our best, and there is only so much we can do, and if we do give out a 3 hour ETA we really do mean that, but we'll try to get there sooner.

And if the temperatures continue to stay near record lows, towing companies will continue to stay busy.

Tiry also says the best thing you can do keep your car starting in the morning is to get a block heater and add heat to your car's gas tank so that your gas lines don't freeze.
