GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Mayor Michael Brown will have some competition in his re-election bid.

Freshman City Council member Tyrone Grandstrand said Wednesday night that he will run for mayor.

The 26-year-old has represented Ward 2 in the areas neighboring UND since 2010 when he first took office.

He previously was student body president at UND.

Grandstrand held a neighborhood conversation on ways to improve the community at Winship Elementary Wednesday night.

He says city leaders need to listen to citizen input before making big decisions.

"Over the next five months, I'll be reaching out to thousands of residents to see how they believe we can improve Grand Forks just like we did tonight. And I hope you'll join me in this effort to make Grand Forks a better city for everyone," Grandstrand said.

Mayor Brown said last week that he would run again for an unprecedented fourth term.

The city election is in June.
