NECHE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - A nearby school got a prestigious national award for its lunch menu.

The Healthier US School Challenge Program gave Neche Elementary its highest honors.

Neche Elementary has been serving lunch like this for years. In fact, they weren't even aware you could receive an award for being healthy. When an inspector came by a few months ago, Principal Paul Hagness thought he was in trouble.

"This particular day she came in and asked if i had a few minutes and it just sounded like it was bad news and she said no kind of the opposite," said Principal, Paul Hagness.

At Neche, kids learn the importance of nutrition not only in the lunch room, but by their teachers, too.

"If they're told in the classroom that something's bad for them then sometimes that can discourage a child from wanting that," said head cook, Bonnie Schaler.

And kids definitely get the message. They were surprised about the award.

"I asked Bonnie, 'Is it for real?' and she said 'Mmhmm!" said Krissy.

"If you don't eat healthy than you could not get tall and strong," said Madison.

"If you eat bad stuff, then its not very good for you," said Lauren.

Head cook, Bonnie tells the kids to eat all the colors of the rainbow. But it seems the buttery noodles are what she's most famous for.

"Butter noodles," said Madison.

The butter noodles, everyone tells me about them, why?

"Because they're so buttery," said Madison.

"I think it's butter," said Rylee.

But don't let the butter fool you, Bonnie still manages to make her butter noodles healthy. She says it's important she makes new meals everyday.

"Promote new foods for the kids and a lot of times its extremely receptive," said Schaler.

"It is pretty neat for a small town like this to get recognition," said Hagness.

And now the kids of Neche, can say their school serves some of the best and healthiest food in the nation.
