Freezing Rain Makes Travel Treacherous Around Region

GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Freezing rain fell Monday evening in northeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota, making roads slick and causing cars to slide off the road.

GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Freezing rain fell Monday evening in northeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota, making roads slick and causing cars to slide off the road.

As of 9 p.m. Monday, there weren't any reports of injuries caused by the icy roads. There were reports of cars in the ditch, though. There was a crash on U.S. Highway 75 between MN Highway 220 and Polk County Road 9 or about two miles north of Climax, MN. Information on any injuries wasn't available late Monday evening.

Another crash happened Monday south of Grafton. Two of three women injured were released from the hospital. A third was transferred to Grand Forks. Read more here.

Many roads in northwest Minnesota were hazardous according to the DOT. Black ice and freezing rain were reported.

Roads in northwest ND were continuous ice or compacted snow from Grand Forks to Grafton and in the Grafton area. North of Grafton, roads were scattered with ice or frost.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for extreme northeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Cities and surrounding areas including in the advisory are Crookston, East Grand Forks, Hallock, Roseau, Baudette, Warren, Newfolden, Red Lake, Thief River Falls, Red Lake Falls, Fosston, Bagley, Bemidji, Cavalier and Grafton.

Significant ice accumulations are not expected, but roads are slick and will remain so overnight. Drive with caution and prepare for rapidly changing road conditions.

Forecast for Grand Forks area

Tonight: A slight chance of rain or freezing rain before midnight, then a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28. South wind 6 to 9 mph becoming northwest. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tuesday: A 40 percent chance of snow before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32. West northwest wind around 11 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 16. West wind between 7 and 9 mph.

Forecast for Grafton area

Tonight: A chance of rain or freezing rain before midnight, then a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a steady temperature around 28. South southwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming northwest. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Tuesday: A 20 percent chance of snow before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. West northwest wind between 9 and 11 mph.

Forecast for Thief River Falls area

Tonight: A slight chance of rain or freezing rain before midnight, then a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. South southeast wind 7 to 9 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tuesday: A 40 percent chance of snow before noon. Cloudy, with a steady temperature around 29. West northwest wind between 9 and 11 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Forecast for Roseau area

Tonight: Rain or freezing rain likely before midnight, then snow likely. Cloudy, with a steady temperature around 28. Calm wind becoming north northwest around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Tuesday: A 20 percent chance of snow before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. West northwest wind between 7 and 9 mph.
