North Dakota Senator Byron Dorgan drops a bombshell. He will not run for re-election next year.

The long-time incumbent says he decided over the holidays that he has other interests that he wants to pursue.

Dorgan said in a statement released today that he has been making plans for a campaign, but began wrestling with whether serving another six year term was the right thing for him to do.

While he did not refer to possible opponent Governor John Hoeven by name, Dorgan said in his statement that the prospects of a difficult campaign did not factor in his decision not to run. In fact, Dorgan says he believes he would win re-election if he ran.

Dorgan says he has been contacted by a publisher to write two more books and he'd like to do some teaching and work on energy policy in the private sector.
