Republican North Dakota Governor John Hoeven is responding tonight to the announcement that Senator Byron Dorgan will not run for re-election.

Hoeven has not made any official announcements on whether he will run for Dorgan's seat, but tonight did say he is now "seriously considering it" and will make an annoucement of his intent in a few weeks.

John Hoeven: "We are very serious about the race, we are taking a careful look at it. We always approach any race on the basis of the things we believe in and how we can best serve the people of north dakota and that's exactly what we have been doing and like I say- we will have an announcement of our intentions within a couple of weeks."

Republican Hoeven has routinely brushed aside questions about a Senate candidacy with a statement that he was focused on his job as governor. If democrats lose Dorgan's senate seat it could affect the Democratic hold on the Senate.

With an effective 60-40 majority, they can now break Republican filibusters if all 60 stick together.
