CROOKSTON, MN (WDAZ-TV) - The founder of a famous barbecue chain brought his story of hope and inspiration to the Crookston campus of the University of Minnesota on Thursday.

Dave Anderson, better known as the founder of Famous Dave's, told his story.

Dave shared valuable advice on how he created more than $20,000 jobs and generated billions in sales.

There was standing room only in the ballroom at U of M Crookston as more than 200 people gathered to listen to Famous Dave share his story.

"I think my story and the story of famous dave's is one any college kid can get ahold of because what I tell these young people is that it doesn't matter where you come from, it doesn't matter or what you've been through, the only thing that really matters today is that if you have a dream and you're willing to work for it. Anything is possible, so don't give up on your dreams," Anderson said.

Dave offered valuable advice from his journey, which began selling Indian fry bread in a lean-to

"Whatever it is you do in life you have to do it with passion," Anderson said. "We don't realize that we are responsible for the change that happens."

Students were eager to take notes as Dave shared his tips for success after college. It's valuable advice coming from someone who got poor grades in high school and no undergraduate degree, but later went on to earn a masters degree from Harvard and a PhD.

"I think today's student has to recognize that they're no longer competing in a local way, they're completing on a global level," Anderson said.

"He's a very enthusiastic speaker, very motivating. It's been a very, very good experience," UMC student Wemimo Abbey said.

With more than 180 restaurants already open nationwide, Dave says not to rule out a famous Dave's in our area.

"All I can say is that one day, Famous Dave's is gonna be recognized as America's best barbecue joint with restaurants all over the country, including Crookston," Anderson said.
