BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Supporters of the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname are finishing their petition campaign Tuesday night.

Referendum organizer Sean Johnson says they have close to 16,000 signatures. They need at least 13,452 names to force a statewide vote on whether UND must keep the Fighting Sioux name.

Johnson says the petitions will be delivered to the North Dakota Capitol at about 10 p.m. Tuesday. The deadline is midnight.

The petitions should be enough to revive a North Dakota law that says UND has to be known as the Fighting Sioux.

But the question won't be settled until Secretary of State Al Jaeger reviews the petitions, and that will take a month.

If the petitions have enough names, the issue will be put to a statewide vote.
