GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Get ready for another round of pain at the pump. Gas prices are on the rise and they're expected to get much worse.

Gas prices are already at record highs for this time of the year, and they'll only keep rising as we near Memorial Day.

They're expected to climb above $4 a gallon by May.

People in our area are finding ways to cope with rising gas prices. Mark Kulp rides the bus to save money and just last week Kulp bought a hybrid car to get better mileage.

"That's why I traded my old car for a new one. I knew prices were going to go up. Here probably four dollars a gallon, on the west coast probably five, 5.25 a gallon," Kulp said.

Others say they plan on staying off the roads completely.

"It takes all my money to live on now. I don't have any money to do anything else. I cant go out anywhere or do anything to enjoy life, I just stay home all the time," Rocky Rash said.

"I think people have gotten used to the three dollar mark but when it hits four, five dollars, I think we all will be doing that. You can't afford to go," East Grand Forks Floral owner Shelly Duchscherer said.

Duchscherer says it's not just about saving money. The future of her flower delivery business depends on the price at the pump.

"It really kind of angers me a little bit. I get worried about our flower shop because if people have to spend all their money on gas, they don't have extra for flowers, and then it's more expensive for us too with the delivery vans," Duchscherer said.

Economists say for every 10 cent increase at the pump, consumers nationwide cut other spending by $9 billion.

"I am worried about that. Summer is a quieter time as it is, and if gas goes that high people wont have money to do extras," Duchscherer said.

The average gallon of gas is $3.44 right now in our area. That's more than a 20 cent increase in the past month.
