GRAND FORKS, ND (WDAZ-TV) - A three car accident on Gateway Drive sent an elderly couple to the hospital, and left police searching for the woman who caused it all. Police searched the Budget Inn motel right next to the accident for 26 year old Ebony Miles.
As a result of it all. The Grand Forks woman has been charged with DUI and fleeing the scene of the crash among other charges.
The General Manager of the Budget Inn says she had to crawl out of the passenger's side of the vehicle in order to get out of the car.
Another witness says Miles had a bottle of alcohol in the front seat of the '01 Nissan.
"Thank god I have insurance, I just hope she does because someone is buying me a car," said passenger of the '08 Kia, Susan Brieger.
Susan Brieger was in the car with her husband and son when police say Ebony Miles' ran a stop sign in her white '01 Nissan and slammed into red station wagon with an elderly couple inside. Raymond Umphrey of Inkster was driving that red wagon with his wife Florence. Police say their car spun around and flew into the southbound lane and collided with Brieger's car.
"The driver was alert and had a big scratch on the top of his head, the lady in the passengers seat had a big goose egg bump on the top of her head and it was bleeding and she bit her tongue and was bleeding from her mouth," said Brieger.
Both Raymond and Florence Umphrey were transported to Altru Hospital by ambulance. Raymond has been treated and released, but Florence is in serious condition. Breiger says Ebony Miles approached her after the accident.
"Well she got out of her car and started coming over and I was mad of course and calling her names and stuff and she wanted to get in a fight with me," said Brieger.
After the confrontation Police say Miles got back in her car and fled the scene. She drove to the Budget Inn, then abandoned her car and ran. About 30 minutes after the accident, police found Miles and arrested her.
