DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - The three-month search is nearly over to find the next superintendent for Devils Lake Public Schools.
The interview process finished Friday and now all that's left is to decide who is the right candidate for the job.
Starkweather-Munich schools superintendent Kevin Baumgarn hopes he gets the chance to head a larger district.
"The opportunity to move up and work with more people, just a good opportunity."
Devils Lake School Board president Steve Halldorson says any of the finalists would be able to fill the job.
He says, "We've had five very competent candidates. It's gonna be a very hard decision to choose one."
The school board has spent three months going through 18 applications and organizing interviews with the five finalists. Halldorson says all five have shown the qualities needed to run the district.
He says they're looking for, "a true leader. One that can get along with staff members, community members, the students. This is a very big job."
Board member Leeann Johnston says there is no clear front-runner for the job, but that will change by next week.
"We'll all sit down on Monday night, after much homework I'm sure this weekend, and come to a good conclusion", she adds.
As for Baumgarn, he says his interview went well, but he's not planning to decorate a new office just yet.
He says, "Well I made it to one of five. That gives me a 20% chance at least, so we'll see. It's ultimately their decision."
