(WDAZ-TV) - Pembina County State's Attorney Stuart Askew has resigned one day before a hearing that could have led to his ouster.
The resignation is effective Monday and the hearing has been canceled.
It was Askew's right to respond to allegations of misconduct and job failings going back six years and his chance to defend himself as Governor Jack Dalrymple requested he be removed from office.
In a 10-page response and resignation, Askew says that he believes the state would not have been able to make a case and remove him from office.
However, Askew says all of the accusations stripped him of his ability to serve the people of Pembina County effectively and that it would be hard for him to return to work after facing this intense scrutiny.
The initial state investigation of Askew was sparked by a petition last November that accused him of misconduct, lack of diligence and communication, neglect of duties, intimidation and creation of a hostile work environment.
