BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A federal jury in U.S. District Court in North Dakota has found a Texas man guilty of attempting to transport a minor for criminal sexual activity.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says the jury convicted 47-year-old Rodney Goodwin of Dallas on Thursday.

Purdon says Goodwin knew that the girl was under 18 years of age and convinced the girl to run away to meet him. He contacted her from June to October 2010 through social media and the telephone.

Authorities say he intended to engage in sexual activity with the girl.

Purdon says the girl ran away but was unable to arrange for Goodwin to purchase a bus ticket for her and eventually returned home.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison and a $250,000 fine.
