FARGO – A semitrailer spilled dozens of bags of sunflower seed onto an Interstate 29 on-ramp here Tuesday, prompting the Department of Transportation to bring out a snowplow to clear the roadway.

The state Highway Patrol says the truck had been loaded with pallets of black oil sunflower seeds about five minutes before the spill, which happened at about noon when the load shifted to the left.

The on-ramp from westbound 12th Avenue North to southbound I-29 remained open, but traffic was slowed as the DOT used a snowplow and then a brush to remove the spilled seed. Bags also were pulled by hand from the roadway.

A state trooper said at 1:45 p.m. that crews were still trying to reload and center the bags on the trailer.

The driver, whose name wasn’t immediately released because the spill remains under investigation, received a $20 citation for loose or leaking load.

No one was injured.
