DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - The Devils Lake School Board is welcoming the district's first new superintendent in a dozen years.

The board approved a three-year contract for Scott Privratsky on Wednesday.

The decision was finalized Tuesday night after five finalists were interviewed last week.

Privratsky has been the business manager for the school district for the past 19 years. He was a teacher in the district before that.

He says his familiarity with the district means he can hit the ground running. Already he's targeted some issues he wants to address.

"I really want to close the achievement gap between our Native American students and our white students, and we're doing a great job educating all our students, but we can do a better job and I think we can bring our Native American student scores up," Privratsky said.

School Board president Steve Halldorson says the decision was a tough one. He says any of the five finalists could have led the district.

Privratsky will begin his new job on July 1 after current superintendent Steve Swiontek officially steps down.
