A 20-month-old boy pulled from a hot tub at a Grand Rapids hotel on Wednesday has died from his injuries, police said today.
Grand Rapids Police Chief Jim Denny identified the boy as Tony Lee Scovel of rural Bovey.
Grand Rapids police officers responded to a report of a possible drowning at the Sawmill Inn at about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday. Officers were told that a boy had been pulled from a hot tub and that CPR was in progress.
At the hotel, officers assisted paramedics in attempting to stabilize the child. The boy was taken to Grand Itasca Hospital and then transferred to Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.
Investigators found no indication of gross negligence or cause for suspicion, Denny said Thursday and reaffirmed this morning.
“It was just an extreme tragedy and an accident that occurred,” he said Thursday. “There was a birthday party going on. The kid had wandered off from the party. It was in close proximity to where the hot tub was. By the time they realized the kid had wandered off someone discovered him in the hot tub.”
