Despite recent snows, the Department of Transportation's budget for Lake Region snow removal is looking good this biennium, thanks to the mild November. The biennium started in July of last year.

The DOT went over its budget last year because of the heavy snowfall last winter. The rising fuel prices were also to blame, but that was accounted for this biennium. The DOT has also spent less removing snow this winter, and on materials like salt and de-icer.

Wayde Swenson/DOT District Engineer: "It was costing the state per event approximately a million dollars, so if you take that by the eight districts, it's a little over $100,000 per district."

The DOT also has about three million dollars budgeted for operating snow removal equipment.
