GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Employees at the South Washington Burger King detained a robbery suspect late Saturday night until police arrived and arrested him.
The suspect refused to cooperate with police and give his identification. He later told jail officials a name, but police were working to confirm his identification. Police did release a booking photograph of the suspect Sunday afternoon.
The suspect was arrested, booked into jail and charged with attempted robbery, terrorizing and simple assault.
Police believe the suspect did not use a weapon and store employees say they didn't notice one.
Officers were notified of the robbery at 1416 S. Washington by a 911 call at 10:11 p.m. Saturday night. The suspect was reportedly still in the business and was being detained by employees, according to a media release issued early Sunday morning.
The suspect entered the business and tried to take money from a safe. But two male employees were able to detain the suspect until police arrived. Officers say there were some punches thrown in the scuffle, but employees had only minor injuries and didn't require treatment.
"We at the police department recommend, whether a weapon is seen or not seen, not to detain a person. But these employees felt they could do this at that time and they did," Sgt. Kevin Kallinen said.
If you have any information regarding the robbery or saw anything suspicious in the area of the restaurant, call police at 787-8000.
Attempted robbery is a Class B felony, terrorizing is a Class C felony and simple assault is a Class B misdemeanor.
