Work is now almost finished on the cleanout of the Tolna Coulee. Because the ground is now frozen, equipment can now reach the area. Crews are removing a foot of sediment, lowering the elevation to 1458.
In October the Devils Lake City Commission asked North Dakota State Engineer Dale Frink permission to remove an additional 5 feet of sediment.
It got a letter back from Frink, who says he won't support lowering the elevation below 1458 without a drain permit.
Mike Grafsgaard/Devils Lake City Engineer: "The city is discussing some options with removing some additional sediment, whether or not to apply for a drain permit, what other options are available for doing some flood control projects for the Devils Lake Basin."
Only two full days worth of work remain on the cleanout project. It should be finished next week.
At 1458, the coulee is about eight feet above the current level of Devils Lake.
