Minneapolis Bridge Closed After Cable Support Breaks

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A bicycle and pedestrian bridge in Minneapolis has been closed for repairs after a cable support broke and caused a separate pair of cables to fail.

The state Department of Transportation says the cable on the Martin Olav Sabo bridge over Highway 55 failed Sunday. The stretch of road was closed Monday morning so crews could build supports beneath the damaged section

Metro Transit spokesman John Siqveland tells the Minneapolis Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/yucbGo ) the closure prompted the suspension of Hiawatha light rail service Monday at three Minneapolis stations.

There's no immediate word on when rail, road and bike traffic will return to normal.

Sabo Bridge is a 2,200-foot-long cable-stayed suspension bridge. It opened in 2007 to carry bicycles and pedestrians over Highway 55, which is also known as Hiawatha Avenue.
