GRAND FORKS -- Grand Forks Central used two shorthanded goals and two power-play goals to defeat Grand Forks Red River 6-2 in boys hockey Thursday night at Purpur Arena.
Junior forward Casey Purpur led Central with a goal and five assists. Luke Johnson and Danny Ray scored Central's shorthanded goals.
Ray's goal came after Red River's Jake LaDouceur scored on a two-man advantage to slice Central's lead to 4-2 with about seven minutes left in the third period.
Rider goalie Brian Nies made 29 saves. Central's Seth Lang had 13.
The Knights raised their record to 9-1, 4-0 in East Region play. The Roughriders are 8-2 overall, 5-1 in the East Region.
"I thought that was our best game of the year," said Central coach Tony Bina. "From start to finish, we played well. We played hard and guys got involved. We were physical. We controlled the play at times. We just dug deep and got the win tonight."
The teams play again February 2 at Purpur Arena.
