For Some, a Winter Storm is Welcome

GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - With a winter storm watch effective Saturday evening until late Sunday night, some people in Grand Forks are ready to snuggle up, drink hot chocolate and stay indoors.

For others, the possibility of six inches of snow is exciting.

Sara Nelson has been snowboarding for the past couple years.

"It's fun to go to Walhalla or Buena Vista on Saturday or Sunday but when Spring Break rolls around, definitely head out west to Big Sky or Colorado," Nelson said.

This season it's been harder for Nelson to enjoy a sport she loves with many places forced to use artificial snow making the slopes icy and harder to shred.

"It's been a really strange winter. Everyone else would be excited about how warm it's been, but really it just hasn't been any fun because there's been nothing to do with no snow on the ground," Nelson said.

Nelson is a little happier today.

"Super excited, pumped," Nelson said.

As a winter storm watch with the possibility of up to six inches of snow will be in effect starting Saturday night.

"Saturday night snow will begin and I think travel will be most affected late Saturday night and through the day Sunday," National Weather Service senior meteorologist Dave Kellenbenz said.

"I think we could see widespread three to six inch amounts and probably narrow pockets in there of even more than that. So farely significant storm potential with this one," WDAZ meteorologist Daryl Ritchison said.

Meteorologists say this could be considered the first larger winter storm of the season because of the combination of widespread snow and wind.

Although winter outdoor enthusiasts like Nelson may not venture out in the winter weather this weekend, they are making the best of the situation.

"I guess it's not really too safe to go out in the storms but it's fun to have a blizzard party with your friends and welcome the snowstorm," Nelson said.

Meterologists say there could be another storm system moving in on Tuesday as well bringing even more snow.
