CHARDON, Ohio (AP) — A family friend who lives next door to the 17-year-old suspect in a deadly rampage at an Ohio high school describes him as a normal boy who was excelling academically.

Pastor Steve Sawczak on Wednesday told The Associated Press that suspect T.J. Lane was an average kid who didn't exhibit any signs of being troubled.

A prosecutor says Lane has admitted taking a .22-caliber pistol to Chardon High and firing 10 shots at a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table on Monday, killing three.

Sawczak says he's lived next to Lane's grandparents for almost 25 years and is a family friend. He says the grandparents gave Lane a healthy place to live.

He says Lane played outside frequently with his sister, building snow hills and skateboarding.
