FARGO, N.D. --- The University of North Dakota women's hockey team skated to a 3-1 win over sixth-ranked Wisconsin tonight at the Urban Plains Center in the Women's Hockey Weekend in Fargo, N.D.
Sophomores Alyssa Wiebe (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and Sara Dagenais (Montreal, Quebec) along with senior Alex Williams (Eagan, Minn.) scored for the Sioux as they improve to 5-11-3 (4-10-1-0 WCHA).
After defeating the Badgers (12-6-3, 9-5-1-0 WCHA) to open the regular season in Madison, Wisc., on the night they hung their national championship banner, the Sioux wanted to show it wasn't a fluke as it was their first win over Wisconsin in program history.
UND got that always important first goal when Wiebe was able to score her team-leading eighth goal of the season at 7:10 of the first period with the assist going to Dagenais.
Dagenais would add to the lead in the opening frame with her sixth goal of the year at 15:14 sending the Sioux into the first intermission with a two goal lead. She was able to stuff in a rebound after freshman Candace Molle (Anchorage, Alaska) put a shot on net from the blue line.
Much like the second goal, Williams was able to put the Sioux up by three goals in the second period when she crashed the net off a shot from Kelsey Ketcher (Mound, Minn.). After two period the Sioux had a 15-10 lead in the shot total.
The score would hold into the third period when Wisconsin turned up the pressure outshooting the Sioux 17-7 in the final frame after making a goalie change as Becca Ruegsegger entered the game for Alannah McCready. Ruegsegger stopped all seven shots faced in the third but the damage had already been done as the Sioux scored three goals on 15 shots against McCready.
Redshirt freshman Jorid Dagfinrud (Sarpsborg, Norway) was attempting for her second straight shutout but Wisconsin was able to break up that bid with only 27 seconds remaining with their goalie pulled. Dagfinrud would finish the game making 26 saves while allowing only the one goal.
The Sioux and Badgers will close out the series and the Women's Hockey Weekend tomorrow at the UP Center with a scheduled 7:37 p.m. start.
