(WDAZ-TV) - The Fighting Sioux women's hockey team will make its first-ever appearance in an NCAA tournament this weekend and the first-ever postseason appearance by any Sioux team under NCAA sanctions.

The team will be in a NCAA quarter-final matchup versus the University of Minnesota on Saturday at Ridder Arena.

The Sioux are 2-3 against the Gophers this season, and were the last, at-large pick for the tournament.

This is the program's 10th season.

"They've worked really hard. The program has progressed year after year and finally to be able to get to the big show, they only take eight teams, it's a pretty rarified atmosphere, so it's very exciting," UND Athletic Director Brian Fiason said.

The team is under NCAA sanctions and will not be wearing their Fighting Sioux jerseys.

The band and cheerleaders will not be making to trip, but that's unrelated to the sanctions.
