There's a big box in the back of the Maurices clothing store in Devils Lake full of pet supplies.

That's because the store has been reaching out to help local animals throughout the month of September. Maurices has been collecting food, litter, and treats for the city's pound. Customers who donate get a 20 percent off coupon to use when they shop.

The store is also selling a Friends For Life charm.

Half of the proceeds are donated to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

There are more than 700 Maurices stores participating in the collection.

Each individual store gets to pick a cause to donate to.

"The pound is really our only option in Devils Lake for animals that are taken in off the streets. We don't have a humane society and the vet clinics around don't keep animals in," said Assistant Manager Amanda Kenner.

The store will be collecting supplies through the weekend and will be making the final drop-off to the pound early next week.
