DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - North Dakota still has the nation's lowest unemployment and it also has the highest employment growth rate, according to a recent Gallup poll.

Much of that growth comes from the oil patch, but an area closer to home is experiencing a boom of its own.

Ramsey County's employment growth rate dwarfs the rates of both Grand Forks County and Cass County.

The latest statistics show Ramsey County's employment growth rate at 5.3 percent.

"That put us near the top in terms of percentage growth and in numbers. We're definitely trending the right way," Forward Devils Lake director Chris Schilken said.

Schilken says some of the growth comes from temporary construction jobs, but most of the growth is here to stay.

"There's been some expansions too with manufacturing, healthcare," Schilken said.

Of course companies don't just choose North Dakota randomly. Tax incentives draw corporations and jobs in. A new company, Ultra Green, got $2 million from the state and Forward Devils Lake to bring in manufacturing jobs.

"We were lucky to secure a manufacturing company that's gonna be starting up here in the fall, maybe by December of this year, that's gonna start out with 100 jobs, the second year about two hundred and we're hoping to get around 400," Devils Lake mayor Dick Johnson said.

Johnson says when companies bring jobs to town, the benefits are greater than just a tax break.

"The environment is there to do that type of thing through various incentive programs, and it's just a good, positive place to work," Johnson said.

"We're creating more jobs than we were before over a year, so let's just keep it going," Schilken said.

The same Gallup poll that named North Dakota the top job-creating state also named it second in the country in overall well-being.
