'I Don't Get It': Longtime Columnist Marilyn Hagerty Pens Viral Review

GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Since Thursday morning, Marilyn Hagerty's 'Eatbeat' review of the Grand Forks Olive Garden has gone viral.

GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Since Thursday morning, Marilyn Hagerty's 'Eatbeat' review of the Grand Forks Olive Garden has gone viral.

It has had more than 200,000 views and people from all over the nation are calling, wanting to chat with Hagerty.

Viral is almost an understatement at this point.

From the Huffington Post to the Wall Street Journal and the Village Voice, it seems like Hagerty's next gig would be sitting next to Leno or Letterman. But this newspaper columnist doesn't understand what all the hype is about.

She's been writing for the Grand Forks Herald for more than 50 years, but she has never received such a response from what she calls "a simple restaurant review."

"I just don't get it. I figure that someone must've picked it up, maybe the Olive Garden?" Hagerty said.

In the past 24 hours, it's had more views than some food columnists who critique major high-end restaurants. Hagerty says when she wrote the review of the Olive Garden, she didn't do anything different from the hundreds of other Eatbeat articles.

"I don't have a set formula, I just sit down with my notes and write the EatBeat."

Although we tried to sit down where the review originated, Olive Garden wouldn't let us inside with the camera, so we opted for another one of Marilyn's favorites: Ground Round.

"I've eaten here a lot of times," Hagerty said.

Don't let her Olive Garden review fool you. She enjoys the locally-owned restaurants Grand Forks has to offer as well.

"I love to go to Sanders," Hagerty said.

She says she's not picky, but...

"I don't usually order ribs, I don't usually order big steaks."

In fact, she's looking for a good burger joint to review next.

"I like Burger King's burgers," Haggerty said.

Asked if she'd like to do a restaurant review with Jay Leno, she said: "Oh I'd go, I've done worse than that."

The fame hasn't hit her and it doesn't appear that it ever will. The 85-year-old says she doesn't have any big time goals from here on out, but she did tell me to keep an eye out for her next review: the Drunken Noodle.

"I do what I do because I like what I do," Hagerty said. "That's the whole thing, is that I just don't get it!" Hagerty said.
