(WDAZ-TV) - Grafton, ND, seems to be experiencing a bit of a business boom. The Chamber of Commerce there says more then a dozen businesses have come to town over last year.

Mary Kippen is one of the newest business owners in Grafton. Her store called Luscious Boutique sells a large variety of antiques and women's clothing. She opened the store in a building that sat vacant for about five years.

"They are always excited when people come into the store. The old architecture, the wood floors, they just fall in love with that," Kippen said.

Just across the street from Kippen's store, Steve Schueller just opened an upholstery business.

"I have had several people bring things in to be re-upholstered. I have sold quite a bit of used furniture already. Things are going real well," Schueller said.

The Chamber says Schueller and Kippen's businesses are two of about a dozen business that have open in the last year.

Executive Director of the Grafton Chamber Emberly Lietz says because of incentives to fix up building fronts and new businesses, downtown is looking more alive and there are other stores opening up in other places.

"We encourage people to shop Grafton. And when you do that, you want to have something for people to actually shop for and we do," Lietz said.

Lietz says businesses, even the smaller ones, mean more jobs and may help reverse the falling population trend in Grafton.

And more stores, even if they sell some of the same things, might mean more customers.

"Well there is four antique stores, and they have antiques in Grafton. It makes it a better chance that they will come to Grafton for the day with their families," Kippen said.
