GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota scored early and late and Aaron Dell flirted with a shutout as North Dakota beat Bemidji State 4-1 to take the lead in their Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoff on Friday.

The Fighting Sioux (21-12-3) go for the sweep and a berth in the WCHA Final Five on Saturday.

Three of the four North Dakota goals were similar, as the goal-scorers took feeds from behind the net to the left of Bemidji State goalie Dan Bakala and scored.

Connor Gaarder, Corban Knight and Mark MacMillan beat Bakala in that fashion.

"We scored a couple of greasy ones that way," UND coach Dave Hakstol said. "Aaron did a good job stopping some of those scrambles."

Gaarder scored his third goal of the season late in the first period and Knight added his 13th goal to make it 2-0 midway through the second.

Ben Blood netted an empty-netter in the final minute.

Aaron McLeod ruined Dell's shutout midway through the third period, but MacMillan answered one minute later for UND.

Dell made 28 saves for UND and Dan Bakala had 19 stops for the Beavers (17-17-3).

"It was a battle," Hakstol said. "We have to play a more consistent level of playoff hockey. We'll put this one behind us and start (Saturday) from scratch."

Carter Rowney had three assists and Michael Parks two for the Sioux.

UND is 23-2-1 all-time against Bemidji State.
