Minnesota Man Pleads Not Guilty in Hammer Slaying

Thirty-eight-year-old Chad Jamie Gulbertson pleaded not guilty in Freeborn County District Court Monday on all five murder counts.

An Albert Lea man has pleaded not guilty in the hammer slaying of his former girlfriend last June.

Thirty-eight-year-old Chad Jamie Gulbertson pleaded not guilty in Freeborn County District Court Monday on all five murder counts.

Authorities say his ex-girlfriend, 38-year-old Jody Lee Morrow, died of multiple hammer blows to the head.

Defense lawyer Kevin Riha requested a change of venue.

Prosecutor Bill Klumpp objected to moving the trial, saying several witnesses don't have drivers licenses.

The Albert Lea Tribune reports that Judge John Chesterman did not immediately rule on the motion but indicated he would check whether the trial could be held in Olmsted County.

Riha says he intends to rely at trial on a heat-of-passion argument.
