GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Employees at the Aurora Medical Park Laboratory spent Monday afternoon packing boxes to move the lab to a new location.
The lab received notice from Altru, dated March 7, that its lease will be terminated on April 30.
The Aurora Medical Park Laboratory has been on a 30-day, renewing lease. Employees decided to pack up and move Monday in an effort to keep the business operating.
The lab received a second letter Monday, dated March 8, identifying Altru Health System as the building's new landlord.
"We received notice (Monday) that Altru can come in here basically at any time," Lab manager Chris Hanson said.
That letter also identifies the landlord's right to enter the leased premises. Altru CFO Dwight Thompson says they are requesting keys in case of an emergency.
"It's landlord rights and as a landlord, they have notified us that they can come in at any time," Hanson said.
That letter and the earlier lease termination, prompted staff to start packing up. The lease will expire on April 30, but the lab has found a new home at the Stadter Center.
"We decided to get our equipment out before Altru could come in because I know at (Doctor's Hospital) there is equipment that's legally contested that they have put their own sticker on and claimed, and we do not want them to do that to our equipment and tie it up legally," Hanson said.
A statement WDAZ received from Altru on Monday says it has always planned to occupy all spaces in the Aurora Medical Park building as leases end.
The lease termination came as a surprise to lab employees. They were under the impression that they could continue to renew the lease.
Employees at other independently-owned businesses operating in the building say they are beginning to make plans as they anticipate similar notices.
