You may not want to be thinking about taxes yet, but whether you own a home or rent, you may qualify for tax relief.

The Homestead Tax Credit can mean a tax break for those over 65 and those who are permanently disabled. To qualify, people must have an annual income of $26,000 or less. The amount money saved depends depends on the person's income. This tax credit aims to allow people to stay in their homes longer. Devils Lake assessor Gary Martinson says each year 35 to 40 people in Devils Lake get this tax credit.

Gary Martinson/Devils Lake Assessor: "The applications start first of the year. We like to get them done by the end of January but certainly we can extend that some."

People in Devils Lake should apply at the City Offices. Those in Ramsey County but outside the city apply at the courthouse.
