GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — It will be former North Dakota Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp's job to keep a North Dakota U.S. Senate seat in Democratic hands.

North Dakota Democratic convention delegates endorsed Heitkamp on Saturday to run for the Senate this fall.

Heitkamp says she'll push for a balanced budget, and she'll advocate for "energy, agriculture and innovation."

Heitkamp was attorney general for eight years. She served as tax commissioner before that. She hasn't run for office since she lost a race for governor in 2000.

Incumbent Democrat Kent Conrad is leaving the Senate. He's the last of the "Team North Dakota" Democratic trio of Conrad, former Sen. Byron Dorgan and former Rep. Earl Pomeroy.

Republicans Rick Berg and Duane Sand are competing for the GOP endorsement to run for the job.
