The new year brings new hope for recovery for the Lake Region Heritage Center, which was short money at the end of 2009.
In late 2009 staff faced temporary layoffs and reduced work hours. Although they are still on a reduced-hour schedule, they should be working regular hours by the end of this month. The budget was reduced for this year, but the center is still $11,000-12,000 short. Staff are working to secure grant money and fundraising. The City of Devils Lake will also provide quarterly assistance as it's needed.
George Zenk/Heritage Center Board President: "We've seen a significant increase in membership from last fall until now. I think it went from like 36 to, we're at about 142 now."
The heritage center's 100th anniversary celebration is in April. Board President George Zenk says he hopes that will raise more money for the center.
