GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - UND celebrated the 17th annual "Kick Butts Day" on Wednesday.

It's a national event to raise awareness about tobacco use. Members of the Healthy UND Tobacco Free Campus Task Group are urging students to educate themselves about smoking and motivate others to quit.

In North Dakota, the group says tobacco use claims 800 lives and costs $247 million in health care costs each year.

UND went tobacco-free in 2007.

"This event, we're just trying to raise awareness of policy, and if you're ready to quit, we do have a number of quit options available here on campus," Tobacco prevention coordinator Samantha Voeller said.

More than 1,100 Kick Butts Day events were planned across the nation.
