Man Charged in Northern MN Stabbing Death

CASS LAKE, Minn. (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a 20-year-old man in a fatal stabbing in northern Minnesota.

Sheldon James Smith is charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of a 22-year-old Walker man.

Cass County Attorney Christopher Strandlie says the complaint alleges Smith stabbed the victim during an encounter between two groups, and then ran away with his companions.

The victim died on the way to the hospital. The Star Tribune reports the victim's name is being withheld until relatives are notified.

Smith was arrested without incident Thursday. Unconditional bail is set at $750,000, and he remains in jail.

Smith's next court appearance is set for April 2.
