GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - A Grand Forks man and wife are $26,000 richer after they tested their luck in the Northstar Cash Jackpot.
The Ireland natives got lucky just two days before St. Patrick's Day.
Dan McGillicuddy isn't your typical million dollar jackpot winner but the irony of when he won and how he won leaves some wondering just how much luck the Irish man has in his pot of gold.
Every time the McGillicuddy kids come to town, they go to the Blue Moose to enjoy some spinach dip and buy a lottery ticket.
Last Thursday didn't seem like anything out of the ordinary for the Irish couple until they realized they were $26,000 richer.
"It's pretty surreal," McGillicuddy said.
For the past 22 years Dan and his wife Bridget have chosen the dates of their kids' birthdays as lottery numbers and on March 15t, 15, 20, 25, 28, and 31 turned out to be some very lucky numbers.
"My wife always picks these numbers. She's smarter than me," McGillicuddy said.
Either that, or the fact that Dan McGillicuddy bought it from a bartender who's name is also Dan and is 100 percent Irish as well.
"Maybe it was a little bit of good St. Patty's day luck we had," bartender Dan Kinney said.
McGillicuddy says they have no big plans for the money, but he has a plan for next year's St. Patty's Day lotto.
"I'm gonna double up. Just blessed that we won it once. Very few people ever win it once," McGillicuddy said.
"Sounds like its a little bit of destiny," Kinney said.
Whether it was his Irish luck or not, McGillicuddy is pretty happy he was in the right place at the right time.
"God bless America," McGillicuddy said.
After taxes the McGillicuddy's will walk away with $17,651.
