DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - Lake Region fifth graders got a hands-on look today at possible careers in the health care industry.

150 students suited up for the third annual Scrubs Camp at Lake Region State College in Devils Lake.

The students learned about physical therapy, radiology, dentistry and other medical fields.

Jennifer Carlson of the Northeast Education Services Cooperative says keeping medical professionals in rural communities is a challenge.

Carlson says the hands-on courses give kids a better feel for what medical professionals do rather than simply learning about them in a classroom.

"It's just learning by doing and seeing that they can do different activities and if they like it they might pursue it later in life, and we need those careers in rural areas," Carlson said.

Carlson says she hopes the Scrubs Camp can help lead some students to a life of helping others in their community through the healthcare field.
