GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - An online petition drive has been started, asking for the relocation of a proposed adult store, Fantasy's, one block from a north Grand Forks elementary school.

The petition had 146 signatures on Sunday evening. It cites the danger of "unwanted" people visiting the store and was posted on the website Change.org.

Co-owner Kim Patterson has a Fargo location and said she will fight the Grand Forks city council if she's not allowed to open the new store.

The council has proposed new license requirements that would make it illegal for an adult-oriented business within 500 feet of a church, school, park or residence. That could mean trouble for a longtime downtown business, Romantix. The new ordinance heavily cites negative effects of adult stores, such as unlawful activities.

Fantasy's would offer lingerie in a main room, but an 18 and over back room would have adult toys and other items for purchase.

"Under the current zoning laws, the location is fine. But under the new laws it might not be. It's been just one stall tactic after another until they can push through this new zoning law," Patterson said.

The council will next take up the issue on April 2.

It's not clear if the petition will be given to the city council or Fantasy's owners.

The petition reads:

Move their location away from the elementary school

The "adult" store is within feet of the Winship Elementary school. Children are not only exposed to the idea of sex a block from their school, but perhaps even the dangers of "unwanted" people visiting the store. Will it happen? Not sure. But not being sure is a scary thing. Why risk anything that has to do with our children's safety and childhood! This is for our kids! Protect their childhood and their future! Move the location away from this school!
