GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - The United Way of Grand Forks - East Grand Forks raised more than $1 million this year. It's the most money the organization has ever raised in a given year.
Some people in the Grand Forks community are struggling to get by and the United Way is helping out.
Last year the organization raised just more than $960,000, and United Way set a more ambitious goal this year.
Whether it's giving a homeless person a place to sleep or helping stock local food shelves, the local United Way raises funds to help the community.
"We funded this year 33 agencies, these are health and human service agencies," United Way of Grand Forks/East Grand Forks Pat Berger said.
This year, the United Way also funded 51 programs.
There's been an increased need, and that's one of the reasons United Way raised its fundraising campaign goal to 1-million-dollars, and exceeded that.
"We made the million dollars and for us that is a big leap, we had been struggling around $900,000," Berger said.
The need has grown at local food shelves and places like the Northlands Rescue mission.
"Since the flood we've seen a 300 percent increase in the number of people that are coming to stay at the mission," Northlands Rescue Mission Executive Director David Sena said.
What used to be nearly 35 people staying there a night is now up to more than 110 people. The mission receiving $25,000 from the United Way will help with food and other necessities.
"They do a huge blessing not only for our mission here of helping the homeless, but across the community," Sena said.
