FARGO – A Moorhead woman is accused of causing a three-vehicle accident here after drinking and driving with a child as a passenger in her car.

The accident happened at 2:55 p.m. today in the westbound lanes of Interstate 94.

Nicole Aasland, 40, was in the center lane of I-94 when she rear-ended another vehicle just west of the Red River before the exit for South University Drive, said North Dakota Highway Patrol Sgt. Troy Hischer.

A small SUV then hit the same car Aasland struck, Hischer said.

No one was injured, he said. The three vehicles sustained minor damage.

Aasland was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Hischer said.

Driving under the influence of alcohol while accompanied by a minor child enhances the charge from a typical DUI, raising it from a Class B misdemeanor to a Class A misdemeanor.

Hischer said family was called to pick up the young girl who was in the car with Aasland.

“The cause of this accident is a drunk driver at three in the afternoon,” Hischer said. “This is an accident that absolutely could have been prevented.”
