ARVILLA, ND (WDAZ-TV) - The grain elevator in Arvilla is being expanded and some residents aren't happy about it. The Grand Forks County Commission voted unanimously to approve the project, despite complaints from residents.

Some in Arvilla complain that the existing grain elevator is already too loud and that it creates a lot of dust. But, the Columbia Grain Company is expanding.

The company already operates a 2.3 million bushel shuttle train-loading elevator complex. It will add a 35,000-ton bulk fertilizer warehouse, a new storage bin, two workshops and a new office building.

Grand Forks County Commissioners say the majority of the expansion will be to the west of the property and the community.

"The people have done everything that we required them to do. They explained everything to us in detail. There were a couple individuals who came in and complained," Grand Forks County Commissioner Gary Malm said.

The company just completed a 1 million bushel expansion two years ago.

The Commission approved the permit with special conditions to control dust, like applying chemical treatments to surrounding gravel.
