THOMPSON, ND (WDAZ-TV0 - A Grand Forks County farmer won $2,500 to give to his favorite local nonprofit organization.

Eric Derry gave his winnings from the "America's Farmers Grow Communities" to the Thompson Rural Fire District.

Derry has been a firefighter in Thompson for 20 years now and as an area farmer, he knows the importance of keeping rural fire departments operating.

He says the fire department in Thompson has added a number a new firefighters in the past couple years which means there's need for new equipment.

The fire department is using the money to buy new turnout gear. A full set costs around $2,000.

"We have more medical calls actually than fire calls, but grass fire calls, we go to CO2 calls for people's homes. Over time everybody uses the fire department in some way so we just feel it's a big part of our community," Derry said.

"Any money we can get helps us buy equipment so we can help extracation or for fires or whatever. It's a great plus to get some kind of donation," Thompson Fire Chief Gary Adams said.

The money is made available to farmers who apply in 39 states through the Monsanto Fund.
