GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - It's a big week for many writers in Grand Forks. They can engage one-on-one with authors at the 43rd annual UND Writers Conference.

Tuesday was the first day of the conference. The event kicked off with members of the community reading poetry from all around the world.

This year's theme is "Humanimal," exploring the relationship between humans and animals. There's opportunities to listen to local authors as well as some bigger names.

"We'll make announcements of yay we got mark doty or something like that so that we do try to build excitement," event lead co-director Heidi Czerwiec said.

That excitement is expected to draw thousands of people throughout the week.

"We have people who make a vacation out of it who come from Manitoba, Iowa, Wisconsin. We've had people come from all over for the events this week," Czerwiec said.

The conference continues through Saturday. It's all free of charge.
