DEVILS LAKE (WDAZ-TV) - The ice has melted off of Devils Lake, giving anglers a chance to take their boats out earlier than ever before.

Ed's Bait Shop owner John Dircks says the phone at his store has been ringing off the hook. People want to know about fishing conditions on the lake.

Normally people are still ice fishing into April, but Dircks says boats are on the lake earlier this year than he's ever seen.

"Now we can be summer fishing right now. That warm weather we got and the lack of ice we had, it went really really fast and it's just a better thing for everybody," Dircks said.

He says the lake is popular this time of year with out-of-state fishermen because Walleye season hasn't started yet in other states.
