GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - The Grand Forks City Council decided Monday night to expand Columbia Road to six lanes and start reconstruction next year.
The first part of construction will begin at Demers Avenue and stretch to 11th Avenue South. The second phase will begin in 2014 and stretch from 11th Avenue South to 14th Avenue South.
The first phase won't cost any more money to make it six lanes. The second phase is expected to cost $1.1 million more to make it six lanes instead of four.
"We're not building this road for this year or next year or ten years or 15 years or even 20 years. It's for 2050. If we don't do it right now and if I'm alive and I have to get wheeled up here in a bed, and you guys end up adding an extra lane in later on, you'll hear from me," Council member Terry Bjerke said.
Council members Eliot Glassheim and Tyrone Grandstrand voted against the six-lane expansion.
