NEAR GENTILLY, MN (WDAZ-TV) - A fairly large dust devil formed in a burned field about five miles south of Gentilly on Wednesday afternoon. It lasted more than three minutes and broke up after reaching a gravel road.

The field was torched for a controlled burn, but a large plume of smoke could be seen as far away as East Grand Forks. After the fire burned through the field, workers were putting out hot spots.

A huge grass fire burned about 1,000 acres near Kindred on Tuesday. Officials say with dry conditions around the area, it is important to be careful with controlled burns.

The fire near Gentilly stayed controlled, though, and only produced some interesting looking funnels of soot and dust.

A dust devil is a whirlwind of air that has dust and debris caught in it. They're usually 10 to 50 feet in diameter no extending more than 100 feet into the air. Wednesday's dust devil never got much bigger than about six feet in diameter and about 40 feet high at times.

Dust devils are not considered dangerous but can very rarely grow large enough to pose a threat.
