GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) — Officials are warning of an elevated fire danger through the weekend for much of Minnesota.

Fire danger ratings from the Department of Natural Resources show a high to extreme fire danger statewide due to low humidity and high winds.

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for roughly the western third of Minnesota. Friday. It says winds will be from the southeast at 20 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph, with relative humidity as low as 20 to 25 percent. Weather conditions along with dry fuels will create dangerous fire weather conditions.

An extreme fire danger rating means the situation is explosive and can result in extensive property damage.

While campfires are allowed, authorities are urging caution so they don't escape.
