NIMROD, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota National Guard has joined the fight against a wildfire that has burned more than 1,400 acres near Nimrod in north-central Minnesota.

The Guard sent two Blackhawk helicopters and 12 soldiers Monday to help control the fire. Capt. Marc Rassler says they underwent water bucket refresher training last week at Camp Ripley. The Blackhawks carry buckets with 660-gallon capacities.

Commanders say the blaze, dubbed the Jeep wildfire, is 80 percent contained. Property losses have been limited to an attached garage on a residence that was gutted, and one mobile home used as a hunting shack that was destroyed.

Monday's strategy calls for holding the fire within the bulldozed firebreaks and mopping up along the perimeter.

While several homes were evacuated Sunday, no evacuation orders are currently in place.
